THOUGHTS ON AUTUMN
Lee Dowling, Autumn

between Fall Equinox
and Winter Solstice
window of change opens
for an uncertain interval

constituting a winding down
of some hemispheric activity
preceding decline, decay
and subsequent rebirth

so it is when one
plays the “bridge”
on the jazz tune,
“Killer Joe”

or finds oneself
planning a retirement
or new life path
just a few years away

one hour to closing time
receding hairlines
those last sips just before
the straw sucks glass bottom

these transitions,
like the twinkling gleam
your emerald eyes reveal
just before the smile appears

capture Autumn’s essence
with new colors bursting
from Summer’s canopy
as its night and afternoon embrace
